What Is This Site, Anyway?

My old friend Claire Po**er sent me a Facebook message from her new iPhone while waiting to board a plane to South Africa. I forget what word she meant to type, but it came out as pbolly. What is a pbolly, I wondered. A good domain, I thought; and immediately registered it.

How the Bakelite Leg Was Invented

Our great-grand-uncle Dagobert MacMahon landed on these shores in August 1848 on the steamship Belle Reve. He had neatly survived recent insurrections in Paris, which he was quite equipped to do as he was a dab hand with the sword and pistol, having attended St-Cyr in his youth, followed by a stint as officer seconded to the Polish cavalry. In fact General Cavaignac would have made him Minister of War had Cavaignac won the election that year. But look what happened.

Drupal and Joomla! Hand-in-Hand, Into the Sunset

Joomla!, I decided a long time back, was for birdbrains. I do not mean that disparagingly. Joomla! is a Content Management System that enables one to create stupendously beautiful and colorful layouts for your main page, with few restrictions on how you can vary the inside pages. But mostly Joomla! is about splashy color and design that makes you lust and drool. It appeals to the little bird or turtle in us all.

But if you wanted a newsy site, or a practical site, or a site with developer street-cred, then you'd have to go with Drupal or WordPress or custom-build your own CMS.
